excerpt
My front door opened with a loud creak, but my mother didn’t stir. She lay on our faded, torn couch in the fetal position, her arms wrapped around her stomach. By the way she creased her brow and groaned, her sleep seemed uneasy. She must have stayed up as long as possible after hearing the news.
She wasn’t a fighter anymore and, with no useful ability, she would not be called on to help with the search. I pulled the blue and grey blanket from her bed and draped it over her. She twitched slightly, but didn’t wake.
Tomorrow, she would ask so many questions and I didn’t look forward to answering them.
I shut the door to my tiny bedroom and lay down. Pyke had once told me my bed was lumpy and my pillow was thin, but I had never noticed. I stared at the ceiling, a mix of wood and metal. I didn’t feel tired. I didn’t feel anything.
It was like there was a gaping hole inside me, numb to everything.
I wondered what Kyra was doing. Was she sleeping? Still being looked after by the healers? Was she helping out?
If she could have it her way, she’d be fighting Blooders with the Guardjinn. The power coming from her tonight was so strong and so dangerous. I saw my own hatred reflected in her eyes as she killed mercilessly and it alarmed me.
I pulled off my suit and threw it on the floor, not clothes anymore but a collection of shredded material. I lay back, took a deep breath and allowed my ability to deactivate. The cold hit me straight away. It seeped into my skin, all the way to my bones. My limbs quivered and I pulled my blanket around my shoulders, huddled in a ball.
I still wasn’t completely used to feeling things. The small cuts on my skin stung slightly and my muscles ached as I trembled. What hurt the most though wasn’t the physical but the emotional.
Pyke was dead.
My best friend had been killed before my eyes. I had failed to protect Mia from the pain of the truth. And Kyra …
I wished I could wrap my arms around her for warmth and comfort. I wished I could lie there with her, breathing in the scent of cinnamon and apples. I wanted her and yet I told her we couldn’t be together. It was true, of course. I knew what would happen to me now Ivan had seen us together.
She was naive to think we would be accepted. I’d seen it before, what happened when a Guardjinn and a Djinn went public. It didn’t end well, especially for the Guardjinn.
I knew the facts, I knew the consequences. Yet I longed for her touch. I couldn’t have it both ways. Be the loyal Guardjinn I had trained my whole life to become or love a Djinn betraying everything I believed in. I couldn’t have both and even though the choice seemed obvious I couldn’t make a decision.

The child laughed and nodded, making her blonde curls bob. Hatred burned bright and hot in Metis’ chest as she watched the interaction. While she had been imprisoned, the Mercesti elder had been living a life of pleasure with his avowed…the Kynzesti female named Tate. They and their companions had robbed Metis of thirteen years of her existence.

They didn’t deserve the family they had made. They didn’t deserve happiness.

She was determined to take it from them.

Zachariah’s gaze suddenly shifted to the tree where she stood. Metis darted out of sight and stood absolutely still. She had to force herself not to flee and reveal herself. Fear had her heart thudding in her chest.

Her own reaction infuriated her. He would not hold that kind of sway over her, she silently vowed.

Soon enough, he would be the one who was terrified.

“Daddy, that’s not fair!”

Metis dared another glance and watched the boy, Ryder, rush back and tug on his father’s tank top. She was relieved when Zachariah’s attention turned from her position.

“Eden should be with Mommy,” the boy said, glaring at his sister. “She’s inta-ruptin’ you too!”

“Enough, Ryder.” Zachariah lowered Eden to the ground, brushing his hand absently over her hair in a way that confirmed to Metis that he held affection for her. “Take your sister with you. Uncle Tiege will keep an eye on you both until I finally finish this bloody conversation.”

Ryder’s eyes widened. “You’re not s’posed to say bloody, Daddy. I’m tellin’ Mommy.”

Metis didn’t hear Zachariah’s response. She was too focused on the smaller female, who had apparently lost interest in the conversation. The child bent down and picked up the wooden sword that was nearly the same size as she was, gave it a curious look, then tossed it back to the ground. As Derian wisely bent
to pick up the sword to keep it out of reach, the girl skipped away.

Right to Metis.

In an instant, Metis’ plans changed. She realized that she didn’t have to kill the Mercesti elder to get her revenge. During her imprisonment, she had learned about the sentiment Estilorians harbored for each other. She had learned how to use that kind of useless emotion to manipulate her captors and escape.

She knew she could take something from Zachariah. Something that would hurt just as much as peeling his flesh or ripping out his heart.

Maybe even more.

Just as Derian started after the child, Metis stepped out from behind the tree. She was watching the little girl, but registered that the Mercesti commander hesitated. The child’s gaze lifted to Metis as she stopped in front of her. She started to smile as Metis reached for her, but then her expression froze. Realizing the child sensed danger, Metis acted quickly, grabbing her before she could run.

“Eden!”

Zachariah’s desperate cry had all activity in the area ceasing. Metis met his gaze an instant before she teleported with the screaming child in her grasp, and she knew she had been right. It was the Mercesti elder who was now terrified.

He knew he would never see his little girl again.

"Hey!" Aria shouted, not that it did anything to stop their fighting.
"Enough!" James's voice echoed in the confined space. The men let go of one another and stood, dusting off the dirt caked to their skin. A gentleman with red hair and blue eyes stepped toward Aria. He'd been one of the three fighting, a crewmember on the ship.
"Do you know what they're having us do?" he asked. "No," Aria said, glancing back at the die lying on the floor. Aria rolled the large die slightly with her hand. It stood up to her waist in height, though it felt lighter than it looked. She'd never seen a die quite so large. Who made it?
"The festival tonight is entertainment for the commander and the tribe. She's choosing two from the pit and they'll have to do whatever the die says." Aria swallowed nervously as she further examined the giant die. One side showed two people battling with swords. Aria frowned, turning the die onto another side, it revealed a pictograph of two men with guns in a shoot-out. That wouldn't end well for someone. Her heart skipped a beat, and she rolled the die onto another side, covering her lips in surprise. Was that a paddle? Her cheeks burned and she took a step back from the die. James didn't appear nearly as affected as Aria from the news.
He stepped forward, resting his hand on her lower back. "Do we know who has been elected for the festival?" Kali shook her head. "The commander chooses two worthy opponents from the pit of invaders and mainlanders. Seeing as how the mainlanders have assimilated or died," Kali said, clearing her throat, "it's safe to say that one of you that has not been chosen by a tribe member, will be selected."
